HDPE Lumber

Plastic Lumber is typically 100% HDPE (High-density polyethylene) and is a 100% synthetic material.  The chemical properties of HDPE give it excellent resistance to many acids, alcohols and bases.  Follow this link to see a complete list of chemicals that will and wont effect HDPE.  If you are not familiar with this product it is recommended that you request and study the technical testing data from the manufacturer that you choose to buy from.

When your in the market for plastic lumber ask these questions…

  • Is the material 100% synthetic?
  • What are the dimensional tolerances?
  • Is it a premium grade finish, or a utility grade rough finish?
  • Is the center core of the board porous or solid?  If you plan on routing the edges etc the center core needs to be solid to make an attractive edge.
  • Is the color all the way through or is it co-extruded?
  • Is the material mixed with virgin grade plastic or is it 100% recycled?
  • Are their any fillers used to reduce raw materials cost? (this can effect the long term life of the plastic)
